A STEAK SANDWICH AND A...STEAK SANDWICH

This is what you get for catering when you play Rabb's Steakhouse in Ruston, LA. I'm not by any means complaining, I'm just saying. This is a meat and potatoes kind of place. We played Thurs, Sept 18 with Randy Rogers opening. It was great to see those guys and catch up again, it'd been quite a while. We rolled from Ruston to Oklahoma City to play the State Fair and Rodeo. It was non-eventful. We  had a visit from my buddies Troy Johnson, Roger Creager and a couple other band guys. They were in town playing the Wormy Dog and made it over to say hello. Aden and I set up a great vibe room that day...good furniture, good lighting, good tapestry work.

Our show on Saturday in Vinton, LA reminded me of one thing...we belong in arenas. Csinos aren't bad for me personally, but they suck all the energy out of the show because the crowd is sitting and staring at you like a rack of yard tools at Sears (thanks Dan Akroyd, yes I stole it from The Great Outdoors). Even though the show blew terribly, the fun that ensued after was very memorable. I hooked up with my old buddy Jamie Talbert from Beaumont, TX. I helped produce Jamie's record with Phil Pritchett a few years ago and helped him write a couple songs on it. He came to the show with his lovely wife and I sat with them while they grabbed a bite to eat after the show. Then we headed down to the bar to grab a drink or two and rumble beacme heard of our band taking over the stage. I'd had a drink and half at this point and DEFINITELY considered myself in on that plan. Here's what happened...

It turned into a free for all. We started with "Dead Flowers" with Aden on drums, Kline on bass and Alex and I on guitar and vocals (God help us all). From there, Alex launched into "Long Tall Sally" and it became a game of "blues riff in "A", watch me for the changes". When he finished, someone suggested we give the instruments back to the guys who were actually playing the gig that night. I kicked right into the riff for "Mary Janes Last Dance" until everyone fell in with me. It was a great call if I do say so myself...a real crowd pleaser.

I made it home on Sunday and had a day or two to recover. Then my buddy John Eddie came to town for a couple days. John was staying at the Hermitage and I headed down to meet up with him in the bar. While standing in the lobby on the phone, I ran into Pat Green whom I've known for 10 years now (scary). We all three headed down to the bar, had a few drinks and dinner and then went up to Pat's digs to listen to a few cuts off his new record. A very low key night, but a great one. It was good to sit and talk to those guys.
